Female Sterilization - (Essure Tubal Implants)

Essure is a procedure which requires no incisions to achieve permanent sterilization. It is a fairly new procedure here in the USA but has been used in Canada and Europe for several years. This procedure has been performed on over 27,000 women of childbearing age. It has had a high success rate. The procedure involves the insertion of a tiny camera into the uterus through the vagina and cervix. The camera is used to find the openings to the Fallopian tubes. Then the physician will be able to insert a small ring-like device into the tubes. This device has a filament in the center which causes the Fallopian tubes to grow together and become closed. This process requires up to 90 days so the patient must understand that she must use another type of contraception for the first 90 days following the procedure.
