Your doctor confirms a diagnosis of ovarian cancer and determines its extent or stage by taking biopsies during surgery. Your long-term outcome, or prognosis, is favorably affected under the care of an experienced gynecologic oncologist whose expertise can help determine the best treatment options at the time of surgery. During surgery, procedures that are recommended to detect and remove the cancer include the following
A hysterectomy with removal of the ovaries and fallopian tubes or salpingo oophorectomy.
Collection of peritoneal fluid from the abdominal cavity to detect cancer cells.
Removal of pelvic and aortic lymph nodes for microscopic evaluation to detect the extent of the disease.
Inspection of abdominal cavity organs and tissues for cancer cells. biopsies may be done.
Removal of the fatty tissue (omentum) attached to the stomach and large intestine for evaluation to detect the extent of the disease.
