An endometrial biopsy is a procedure that is performed when there are problems with postmenopausal bleeding or irregular and prolonged menstrual cycles. It is also performed when there is an abnormal pelvic ultrasound which reveals an abnormal uterine lining or in some women who have been on tamoxifen.
This procedure involves placing a small instrument into the uterine cavity. This is done because it is not possible for the doctor or nurse practitioner to actually see inside of the uterus. Only the vagina and outer cervix are actually visible during an examination. A small vacuum is obtained by pulling back on the instrument or by connecting a syringe to it. No machine is connected to the instrument. The instrument has a small hole on the end which serves to collect samples of the lining of the uterus.
At times, only a small amount of tissue is obtained so that not enough information is obtained by the biopsy. In this instance, a hysteroscopy or D and C (dilation and curettage) may be required. These are procedures that are performed as an outpatient.
